Drama

In the early years, programmes such as Drawing Club and Helicopter Stories give children exciting opportunities to develop language through imagination and play. In Drawing Club, the children's imaginations are sparked through stories and animations, allowing them to explore different characters, settings and themes. Through Helicopter Stories, children dictate their own imaginative tales which are then acted out by their classmates, helping them see their ideas valued and celebrated while developing vocabulary and storytelling skills.
Drama is embedded in English lessons and across the wider curriculum. Techniques such as role-play, conscience alley, hot-seating and debate allow pupils to step into the shoes of different characters, explore moral dilemmas and express their opinions thoughtfully. These activities deepen understanding of texts and topics while strengthening pupils’ speaking, listening and critical thinking skills.
Performance is a special and much-loved part of life at Shefford Lower School. Pupils have opportunities to perform during Christmas celebrations, proudly sharing songs, stories and productions with families and the wider school community. We also welcome visiting theatre companies, who perform in school and inspire pupils with the excitement of live theatre.
Through these varied experiences, pupils at Shefford Lower School grow into confident speakers, thoughtful listeners and enthusiastic performers, developing communication skills that support their learning across the curriculum and beyond.
Drama should have a place in schools. It helps with communication, vocabulary, understanding of yourself and of the wider world.”
