Curriculum
Mr Wakefield
Curriculum Lead
At Shefford Lower School, our curriculum is designed to be broad and balanced, providing every child with rich and meaningful learning experiences across all subjects. We believe that every pupil deserves access to a range of opportunities that nurture curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of learning.
Our curriculum is underpinned by our key pillars. These ensure that our curriculum provision is Purposeful, Knowledge and Skills Rich, Aspirational, Inclusive, Engaging and Future-Facing.
Together, these principles shape a curriculum that is ambitious for every child, rooted in strong subject knowledge and carefully designed to inspire and motivate learners.
Our curriculum is carefully structured to ensure a progressive development of knowledge and skills from Nursery through to Year 4. Leaders carefully plan with both prior learning and the next stage of education in mind, ensuring that each child’s learning journey is coherently sequenced, progressively built upon, and thoughtfully mapped from start to finish.
Each subject is valued and thoughtfully sequenced so that children build on prior learning, deepen their understanding and apply their skills with increasing confidence and independence. We place equal importance on core academic excellence and the wider curriculum, recognising that personal development, wellbeing and character education are fundamental to success as we work to develop the whole child.
Through high-quality teaching, purposeful assessment and engaging learning experiences, we aim to equip our pupils with secure foundations in Reading, Writing and Maths, alongside strong knowledge and skills in Science, Humanities, The Arts, Physical Education and Technology. We ensure learning is inclusive, ambitious and appropriately challenging for all learners, with opportunities for the curriculum to be applied through project-based and real-world learning experiences for authentic audiences.
Our curriculum is evolutionary by design. It is not static but continually reviewed and refined in response to the identified needs, strengths and interests of our children, as well as the priorities and context of our local community. Through ongoing assessment, pupil voice, family engagement and collaboration with the wider community, we ensure our curriculum remains relevant, responsive and meaningful. This adaptive approach enables us to respond thoughtfully to change, ensuring that learning reflects the world our children are growing up in and equips them with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need both now and in the future.
Central to our vision is the commitment to preparing our children as ‘Future Citizens of the World’. We actively develop 21st century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication. By fostering resilience, global awareness and respect for diversity, we empower our pupils to understand their place in an ever-changing world and give them the confidence to contribute positively and responsibly to it.
Our vision is to develop confident, resilient and respectful learners who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and inspired to make a positive contribution to their community and the wider world.
