We use a shared approach to reading that values children, parents and teachers working in partnership to foster an enjoyment of books. Reading record books provide an important link between home and school and parents are encouraged to write a comment in these when they read with their child.
We have a range of reading books from different publishers which are grouped into levels by colour bands.
Each day children bring home a reading book (young children may bring home some key words to practice) and we ask that parents spend a few minutes each day sharing the book with their child and then making a note of this in the child’s reading record.
In addition to reading books, children are able to select a library book from the school library every week and we ask that this be returned on a weekly basis in order that it can be changed.
We ask that children and parents take care of the school books brought home so that they can continue to be used by many children throughout the academic year. Unfortunately, in the event of loss of a book or significant damage, parents will be asked to pay for its replacement.
The school promotes reading through participation in national events such as World Book Day, when children are encouraged to dress as a character from one of their favourite books, opportunities are also given to children to purchase new books through book sales and the PSA run Book Club.
