At our school we recognise that some pupils may help to look after a family

member at home. These pupils are known as young carers, and we are committed to making sure they feel supported, understood, and able to thrive in school.

Our Young Carers Lead is Miss Cooper, who works closely with children and families to make sure the right support is in place. Miss Cooper helps to identify and refer young carers to additional support where needed, and works with families who may benefit from extra help or guidance.

If your child is a young carer and you haven’t yet heard from Miss Cooper, our Young Carers Lead please get in touch: Familysupport@shefford.cbeds.co.uk

We are here to help and to ensure every child & Family feels supported both in school and at home.

What is a Young Carer?

A young carer is a child or young person who helps care for a family member who may:

  • Have a long-term illness

  • Have a disability

  • Experience mental health difficulties

  • Struggle with drug or alcohol misuse

  • Need extra help with everyday tasks

Young carers may help with things such as:

  • Helping around the house

  • Looking after younger siblings

  • Helping someone take medication

  • Providing emotional support

  • Helping someone move around safely

How We Support Young Carers

At our school we aim to make sure young carers feel supported and understood. Support may include:

  • A trusted adult in school to talk to

  • Extra understanding if homework or attendance is affected

  • Time and space to talk if things are difficult at home

  • Signposting families to additional support services

We treat all information sensitively and respectfully.
