Our Behaviour Approach
At Shefford Lower School, we have three Core Rules that guide behaviour across the school. These rules can be applied in every situation and are intentionally kept simple so that all members of our school community, pupils, staff, and parents/carers, can understand and apply them consistently.
Our Three Core Rules
Be Kind Be Helpful Be Safe.
Pupils are regularly reminded that when everyone follows these rules, we create a happy, respectful and supportive school environment.
Alongside our Core Rules, we promote our school values, which encourage children to be the best versions of themselves and apply these values in all aspects of school life and learning.
All of our expectations are shared using positive language, helping to build strong relationships and support a positive behaviour culture. At Shefford Lower School, we believe that strong relationships are key to developing positive behaviour and attitudes to learning.
Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their behaviour, understand how their actions affect both themselves and others, and learn how they can make positive choices.
Clear visual reminders of our expectations are displayed in every classroom to support pupils and celebrate achievements. This shared approach helps all pupils work together towards common goals and supports a positive and collaborative school community.
At Shefford Lower School, we are committed to developing the learning behaviours that help every child succeed. We actively track and monitor our Shefford Learning Behaviours to understand how pupils approach their learning, including skills such as resilience, independence, regulation and collaboration.
This information helps staff identify strengths and areas for development, allowing us to explicitly teach and reinforce these key skills through the curriculum. By monitoring learning behaviours in this way, we ensure that all pupils are supported in developing the attitudes and approaches they need to become confident, successful learners.
Further details about how we support behaviour can be found in our Behaviour Policy, which is reviewed and updated regularly throughout the academic year.
Our House System
All pupils at Shefford Lower School belong to one of our four houses, named after the four elements:
Water, Earth, Air & Fire
The house system helps to build a strong sense of belonging, teamwork and identity within the school. It also encourages pupils to aim high, work together, and celebrate success.
All pupils are placed into a house when they join the school and remain in that house throughout their time at Shefford Lower School.
Each house is supported by House Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects, who help to encourage their teams, promote our school expectations and values, and support the wider school community. They also share updates and messages during our weekly celebration assemblies.
